Nafissatou Thiam était l'une des trois candidates retenues par la Fédération européenne (EAA) pour le prestigieux titre d'Athlète Européenne de l'année 2018.

Ce vendredi soir à Lausanne, la Belge, championne d'Europe de l'heptathlon, n'a pas été récompensée à l'occasion des Golden Track Awards. C'est la sprinteuse britannique Dina Asher-Smith, triple championne à Berlin (100, 200, 4X100), qui a été élue 'Athlète Européenne de l'année'.

Pourtant sacrée "Athlète mondiale" de l'année 2017 par l'IAAF, Thiam n'a toujours pas été récompensée au plus haut niveau en Europe. Thiam reste invaincue en heptathlon depuis sa victoire à Rio.
Dans la catégorie 'Rising Star' (Étoile montante), le Suédois Armand Duplantis et Norvégien Jakob Ingebrigtsen ont été préférés à Jonathan Sacoor, champion du monde juniors du 400m et champion d'Europe du 4X400m seniors avec les Belgian Tornados.

Le Français Kevin Mayer, nouveau détenteur du record du monde du décathlon, a reçu le prix d''Athlète Européen de l'année'. Il était en concurrence avec le perchiste Duplantis, Ingebrigtsen et le sprinter turc Ramil Gulieyev.
